Money mindset is the foundation of a business. If you don’t believe that you deserve to make money, then you won’t make money, and one of the main reasons you’re building a business is to make money, right?
It doesn’t matter if you are at a point where you are just getting started in your business or if you’ve owned your company for 20 years; checking to make sure your money mindset is on pointe is key to success. Or, you could quite possibly be missing out on making the money you deserve to make.
So, here are some easy steps you can take to start building your money mindset:
Build Your Money Confidence
Basically, you need to start by completely rewiring your brain into believing that you TRULY deserve to make the money you wish to make. This isn’t so easy for many of us, because we have some deep, internal thoughts and perceptions about money that aren’t so easy to change.
If you are someone who is shifting from a 9-5 job into an entrepreneurial role, you’ll have to also work on disengaging from your J.O.B. If you own your own business, you most likely won’t be paid in the same manner you were paid in your 9-5 job. Instead of your worth (pay), you will most likely be paid in lump sums close to or equal to what you made semi-monthly or monthly in your corporate job.
Besides disengaging from your job, great ways to build your money confidence include using affirmations, visualizing and identifying your limiting beliefs; all of which I will be discussing further below!
Affirmations for your money mindset
Sometimes affirmations seem trivial and silly, but there is a reason why so many people use them: they work! The more you say them, the more you will believe them. Some great money positive affirmations include:
- “I am so happy now that $_____ is easily deposited into my bank account each month.”
- “I am worthy of success and of making money.”
- “The universe is abundant, and money flows easily to me.”
- “Wealth constantly flows into my life.”
If you’re having trouble finding some affirmations that resonate, go to Google to see some; you will discover thousands of them!
You can say the affirmations to yourself out loud in front of a mirror, or in your head on your commute, in the shower, when you’re exercising, you get the idea.
Another great way is to write them on post-it notes and put them all over your workspace and home so that you can quickly read them every day!
Visualizations for your money mindset
Visualizations are incredibly powerful in helping build a money mindset. In fact, Researchers have found that visualizing an action stimulates the same part of the brain that is stimulated when actually performing the action.
Particularly, athletes use visualization practices to help them achieve goals in their competitions.
For example, a runner might set a goal of running a mile in six minutes or less, but if she visualizes herself running the race in under six minutes in as much detail as possible will have a much better chance of achieving that goal because of the power of visualizations.
In the case of money, you can visualize yourself receiving checks in the mail.
Picture yourself going to your mailbox, sorting through the mail, seeing a check, getting excited, tearing open the envelope, seeing the amount on the check and feel the emotions of gratitude, happiness, and excitement. Note that you don’t need to know where the checks are coming from; all you need to do is expect them!
Another great exercise is to picture the amount of money you want to see in your bank account. Visualize yourself logging into your mobile bank app on your phone, typing in your password or passcode, clicking on your checking/savings account and seeing the amount of money you want to have there.
A couple of months ago, I was rebranding my business, and as I’m not a Graphic Designer, I was looking for someone to create one for me. I looked around at several different sites to see what people offer, and nothing stuck out to me. So, I decided to visualize receiving an email from someone that had the perfect logos in his portfolio and how happy and excited I would feel to find him finally.
The next morning, I got a text from a friend who does web design and branding, and she said, “ I had an idea last night: what if I created you a logo for your business since I know you don’t like the one you created and it could be for your birthday?” She had no clue I was looking around or even that I was rebranding, and my birthday was five months away at that time. So a couple of weeks later, I got an email from her with my perfect logo, and I felt incredibly happy and excited. Visualizing REALLY works!
Identify Your Limiting Beliefs
Whether we care to admit it or not, we all have limiting beliefs. They’re the negative ideas we think and say about money that limit us from making the kind of money we want to make. Some examples include:
- “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
- “There isn’t enough money in the world to go around.”
- “I can’t afford this.”
The first step is to identify the limiting beliefs we have. A wonderful way to do this is by writing a letter to money. Example:
Dear Money, I really hate that I don’t have enough of you in my life. It’s been this way my entire life and I’m just waiting and waiting for you to come into my life with more abundance, but you never do. My momma always told me, “Money doesn’t grow on trees,” and my momma was right.
The act of getting all of your thoughts down without judging or deciphering them until after you’re finished writing is so powerful in recognizing how you actually feel.
Once you’ve figured out your limiting beliefs and how you really feel about money, you can start to take steps to reverse your thoughts. Let’s say you go to Target, and you find an adorable sweater, you check out price tag and say “nevermind, I can’t afford this.” Instead of limiting yourself completely and dismissing the item you wish to purchase, start priming your brain to consider ways you might be able to afford it. Ask yourself: “HOW can I afford this? And let the wheels start turning.
Is there a consignment shop in your town where they pay you for clothes you turn in? Do you have some furniture, books, movies or home decor you no longer want and can sell on eBay? Could you put this on a credit card and pay it off the next month? Maybe instead of getting that massage this month, you decide to purchase the sweater instead.
It doesn’t matter what it is, but just working to consider ways you could afford the item rewires your brain into recognizing that you CAN indeed afford it. In fact, the next time you come across this situation, I challenge you to think of ways you can afford to purchase it, and then ACTUALLY buy it!
In addition, be sure to be using affirmations that will also work to rewire your brain into dismantling your limiting beliefs. When you think to yourself, “money doesn’t grow on trees,” you can begin to recognize when you say it, pause, and then reverse it with an affirmation: “I attract wealth easily.” Again, the more you say it, the more you will believe it.
So now that you have the tangible actions steps to build your money mindset, begin to utilize them and work them into your life! It doesn’t matter if you are really getting started in owning your own business or if you’ve held one for ten or more years, these steps should always be the ones you refer back to check in on your money mindset. Once you know and utilize these 3 ways often, and you can indeed begin making the money you’ve always dreamt of making!
